The finished crochet bunting: colorful triangle flags joined into one decorative garland.

This colorful crochet bunting pattern brings a relaxed, handmade feel to a wall, shelf, patio or celebration. Each flag is worked as a small triangle, topped with a soft yarn pompom and joined to a long crocheted cord.

It is a beginner-friendly home-decor project built from three simple elements: double-crochet clusters, chain spaces and three expanding corners. Make every flag in one palette, or mix the colors for a cheerful boho look.

Materials, Measurements and Gauge

Choose a smooth, worsted-weight acrylic yarn with clear stitch definition. The original color recipe uses one main color and a set of contrasting shades, so every flag has a bright two-color combination.

  • Main color: Color 1, preferably a light neutral such as cream or white.
  • Contrast colors: colorful solids in blue, burgundy, plum, sage, chartreuse, pumpkin, sunshine and taupe.

  • Finishing tools: scissors, a yarn needle and a measuring tape.

Crochet the Triangle Flags

Step 1: Start the triangle

With Color 1, chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring. Work the first round into the ring, making double-crochet clusters separated by chain-3 spaces. These three chain-3 spaces become the corners of the triangle.

Step 1: Form the starting ring and establish three corner spaces.

Step 2: Build the triangle

Continue working in rounds, placing 3-dc groups into the side chain spaces and corner groups into the chain-3 spaces. The side spaces help the triangle grow evenly, while the corner spaces define its three points. Change to Color 2 where the color plan calls for it.

Step 2: Expand the triangle with side spaces and three corner spaces.

Step 3: Finish the flag

Complete the final round, join neatly, fasten off and weave in the tails on the back. Gently flatten the flag and check that all three points are balanced before you add the pompom.

Step 4: Make and Attach the Pompoms

Wind Color 1 around three fingers 125 times. Slide the bundle off carefully and tie it tightly through the center. Cut through both sides of the loops, then trim the yarn until the pompom is round and even. Sew one pompom to the point of every triangle.

Step 5: Join the Triangles into the Garland

  1. Arrange the finished flags in the color order you want.
  2. With Color 1, chain 20 to create the first tie.
  3. Work across the top edge of the first triangle, making 1 sc in each dc and chain space.
  4. Repeat across the top of the remaining triangles, keeping the flags evenly spaced.
  5. For the second row, chain 1, make 1 sc in each chain across, and fasten off at the end.

Finishing and Display

Trim any remaining yarn tails, check that the flags all face the same direction and gently smooth the fabric. Then hang your crochet bunting across a wall, shelf, patio, party table or reading corner. Keep handmade decorations away from open flames, and secure them safely around children and pets.

Helpful check: Make and join one test triangle first. If the flag curls or the corners look uneven, adjust your hook size or tension before you make all 56 triangles.
